About Us l A Message From the President l Misson & Aims l Officers

Soroptimist International of Sacramento was founded in 1923, the fifth Soroptimist club to be established and currently the fourth oldest club still in existence. We are proud to be part of Soroptimist International which is a global volunteer network of women in 130 countries who work to improve the lives of women and girls. Soroptimist is a coined Latin word meaning “best for women.” Our organization strives to be women at our best, helping other women to be their best. Soroptimist’s mission is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.  Soroptimist believes that the most effective way to empower women and girls is by providing them with access to education. When women and girls are educated, they have opportunities, choices, and power to make healthy decisions for themselves and their families and realize their potential.

To accomplish this, clubs administer Soroptimist International’s Dream Programs.  Last year, Soroptimist International of Sacramento raised $46,000 through fundraisers. With additional endowed funds from a legacy of member giving, we were able to provide $40,000 in grants to local community non-profits, award $20,000 in Dream Scholarships to female college students, and give $6,000 in Live Your Dream: Education and Training Awards for women, who have overcome enormous personal obstacles, to help offset costs associated with additional education or training. Our club coordinates a Soroptimist Dream It Be It: Career Support for Girls mentoring program, which delivers interactive sessions aimed at empowering high school girls to break cycles of poverty and abuse and pursue their dreams. Other service projects throughout the year address focused needs.

My theme this year is Moving Forward: Innovate, Develop and Grow. It is through innovation that we challenge ourselves to reimagine what is possible. The Soroptimist founders had a similar desire in 1921–to reimagine how women could rise out of society’s constraints and their circumstances to create a new future for themselves.  Our club has decades of impressive service helping individuals and community organizations through volunteerism and financial support.  To continue this commitment into 2020, we must look forward and innovate the future.

We appreciate the support of our community as we work to improve the lives of women and girls. Soroptimist International of Sacramento is a dynamic group of women who care about making the world a better place for women and girls.  We always welcome new members who share this goal. It is my honor to serve as President as we enter our 97th year.  I’m excited that collectively we’ll Move Forward: Innovate, Develop and Grow our club and in doing so help the women and girls we serve to live their dreams.

In Appreciation,

Elizabeth Payette
President 2019-2020
